Allow us to introduce ourselves – our names are Yannick and Dede, and we’re the brains and brawn behind Kombe Kontracting. In the past 5 years, we’re grown quite an investment portfolio, and helped other investors do the same – but it didn’t quite start out that way.
Yannick renovated his first basement when he was 19. He worked with other contractors to add a secondary suite into his family home, so that they could flip the house and sell it for more money. This was back in 2006, and even then the house sold within 2 days for way over asking. He realized he was onto something.
Fast forward, Yannick had done a few side jobs and other basements, but mostly focused on his degree in Biological Science and entered the corporate world working for a pharma company.
That’s when Yannick and Dede met in 2012, and the rest is history.
In 2015, we bought our first house. We knew we wanted to renovate and sell so we could build up a bigger down payment for our forever home, but with being so busy, we knew we didn’t have time to do it ourselves. After talking to many different contractors, we still had no idea what the best strategy or designs would be to gain maximum value. The infamous line we always got when we asked about different improvements was, “Anything is possible – for a price.”
We were looking for more than a contractor – we were looking for someone who had some experience and who aligned with our investing strategy – and that seemed impossible to find.
That’s when we realized that the traditional contractor just wouldn’t work for investment property renovations.
After too many nights combing through Homestar and Google reviews, we finally realized that in order to make our home and investments work for us, we had to have a contractor who knew exactly where we were coming from;
who understood that we had to follow a concrete budget and strict timelines.
And so, with our past experience, we quit corporate and started doing the work ourselves and investing full time. Over the next few years, we built our team of amazing, skilled and certified tradesmen and hit the ground running.
